Welcome to BodyWise, an AI-powered food scanner app that analyzes photos of your meals and breaks their nutrition down across 13 nutrition areas, along with a Meal Score, AI notes, and trends over time. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we collect it, how we use it, and who we share it with when you use our app ("Service"). By using BodyWise, you agree to this policy.

1. Information We Collect and How We Collect It

Meal scans: When you scan a meal, we collect the photo you capture or select, or the food description you speak or type, or the barcode you scan. This content is collected at the moment you perform a scan and is uploaded to our servers to be processed. See Sections 3 and 4 for how it is handled, shared and retained.
Voice input: If you log a meal by speaking, your speech is transcribed to text on your device using Apple's on-device speech recognition. Only the resulting text is uploaded — the audio recording is never transmitted to us or to any third party.
Profile details you enter: Your sex, age and, optionally, height and weight are entered by you during onboarding and are stored locally on your device. They are used only to personalize estimates on the device and are not transmitted with your meal scans.
No account required: BodyWise does not require you to create an account or provide your name or email to use the app. A random device identifier is generated to track your daily scan limits and usage history.
Automatically collected information: Device type, operating system, app version, app usage, crash data, and IP address, collected automatically by the analytics and crash-reporting services listed in Section 6.
Payment information: Subscriptions are processed securely through the Apple App Store. We do not collect or store your payment card details.

2. How We Use Your Information

To identify the food you scanned and estimate its nutrition across the 13 nutrition areas shown in the app.
To calculate your Meal Score and generate AI notes, reports and yearly recaps ("Year Wrapped").
To enforce free usage limits and manage subscriptions.
To analyze app performance and fix bugs using aggregated analytics and crash data.
To show ads to non-premium users.
To communicate updates or respond to your feedback.

We do not sell your data, and your meal scans are never used for advertising or ad targeting.

3. AI Processing and Third-Party AI Services

What is sent

To identify your food, the meal photo you capture or select, or the food description you speak or type, or the barcode you scan, is transmitted over an encrypted (TLS) connection to BodyWise's server, which forwards it to a third-party AI provider for analysis. Voice audio is never sent. Your name, email, height, weight, age and other profile details are never sent with a scan.

Who it is sent to

Meal scans are processed by Google (Gemini) as our primary AI provider. If that provider is temporarily unavailable or rate-limited, the same scan may instead be processed by xAI (Grok) or Meta (Llama). All three providers are accessed through Google Cloud Vertex AI.

Protection of your data by these providers

These AI providers are used under enterprise terms which prohibit using the data submitted through the service to train their models, and which require confidentiality and security protections that are the same as or equal to the protections described in this Privacy Policy. Data submitted for analysis is used solely to return the requested result and is not retained by these providers for their own purposes. Their own privacy policies are available at policies.google.com/privacy, x.ai/legal/privacy-policy, and facebook.com/privacy/policy.

Your permission and how to withdraw it

      AI processing requires your explicit permission. Before your first scan, BodyWise shows an in-app disclosure explaining exactly what is sent and who it is sent to, and nothing is transmitted unless you tap "Allow & continue". You can withdraw your permission at any time in the app under Settings → "AI & your data", after which no scan data is sent and AI scanning is disabled. You can also request deletion of your stored history at any time (see Section 8).
    

4. Data Storage and Retention

Uploaded meal photos are stored temporarily on our cloud servers (Google Cloud Storage) only for the time needed to process and deliver your result, and are automatically deleted shortly after processing.
The nutrition results, Meal Score, and history generated from your scans are retained on our servers, tied to your random device identifier, so you can view trends and progress over time.
Data in transit is protected using encryption (TLS).

5. Data Stored on Your Device

Your profile details (sex, age, and optional height and weight), your app preferences, and your consent choice for AI processing are stored locally on your device. They are removed when you delete the app. BodyWise does not read from or write to Apple Health.

6. Other Third-Party Services

In addition to the AI providers described in Section 3, BodyWise uses the following services to operate and improve the app:

Google Cloud (hosting and storage) — Hosts our servers and temporarily stores uploaded photos during processing. Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy
Google Analytics for Firebase & Crashlytics — Helps us understand app usage and diagnose crashes. Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy
Google AdMob — Serves ads to non-premium users and may collect device identifiers and usage data for ad delivery. Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy

These services operate under their own privacy terms, which we encourage you to review.

7. App Tracking Transparency

With your permission (requested through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt), BodyWise may access your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) to support a better ad experience. If you decline, you will still be able to use the app fully, and you will see non-personalized ads. You can change this choice anytime in your device's Settings.

8. Your Rights and Choices

You can allow or withdraw permission for AI processing at any time in Settings → "AI & your data".
You can request deletion of any data associated with your device identifier by emailing us at the address in Section 13. We will delete your data within a reasonable time after verifying your request.
You can manage or cancel your subscription anytime in your Apple App Store account settings.
Premium subscribers enjoy an ad-free experience with unlimited scans.

9. Children's Privacy

BodyWise is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If such data is discovered, it will be deleted promptly.

10. International Data Transfers

Your data may be processed on servers located outside your country (for example, in the United States) in compliance with applicable data protection laws.

11. Nutrition and Health Disclaimer

BodyWise provides nutrition information for educational purposes only, based on general nutrition references and AI analysis. It is not medical advice, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider about your health, diet, or any medical condition.

12. Updates to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected here with a new "Last Updated" date.
